Coffee expos, trade shows, and festivals are essential events for those who work in the coffee sector, providing a platform on which to network, collaborate, and showcase their talents.
They help foster discussions around trends and issues within the industry, while also opening up opportunities to learn more about what matters to consumers.
With the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020, thousands of physical coffee events around the globe were cancelled, postponed, or forced to go virtual because of health concerns.
However, as the world recovers and adapts to a post-pandemic future, the specialty coffee industry is already seeing the return of many exciting and educational in-person events.
Read on to learn more about the most important upcoming coffee events for roasters.
Specialty Coffee Expo
The Specialty Coffee Expo is the largest coffee trade show in North America and the flagship event of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA).
For over three decades, this annual event has been held in different cities across the US. In 2022, the three-day event took place between the 8th and 10th April in Boston, Massachusetts.
Each year sees hundreds exhibitors, ranging from roasters and retailers to green coffee traders and equipment manufacturers.
The expo allows visitors to exchange ideas and experiences while networking with numerous industry professionals. In 2022, it hosted the highly anticipated US Coffee Championships, which includes the cup tasters, brewers cup, and coffee in good spirits competitions.
The expo also has a Roaster Village, where attendees can meet and interact with roasters from around the world, before participating in private cupping sessions.
A variety of lectures, courses, and workshops led by industry experts are another key feature of the event. Each one explores a different topic within specialty coffee, as well as the latest innovations in coffee research. As a one-stop event that showcases all facets of the industry, this annual event is not to be missed.
World of Coffee
If the Specialty Coffee Expo is the SCA’s flagship event in North America, then World of Coffee is its European equivalent.
Each year, the specialty coffee community travels to a different European city to attend the region’s biggest trade fair.
This year, World of Coffee is scheduled to take place in Milan and will host five of the seven prestigious World Coffee Championships: Latte Art, Coffee in Good Spirits, Cup Tasters, Cezve/Ibrik, and Roasting.
Attendees will be able to attend a series of lectures, interactive workshops, and cupping sessions. Furthermore, the event features the Roaster Village and a number of networking opportunities thanks to a range of exhibitors and representatives from across the coffee industry.
Notably, the SCA recently expanded World of Coffee to the Middle East, with an inaugural show having taken place in Dubai during January 2022.
Producer & Roaster Forum
Every year, the Producer & Roaster Forum (PRF) encourages coffee professionals from around the globe to meet in a coffee-producing country. It is made up of two parts: an Origin Trip Experience followed by the main forum event.
During the first three days of the event, roasters will travel to coffee farms in the host country. This provides them with the opportunity to meet coffee farmers, visit mills, and take part in activities such as in-farm cupping and round tables.
Then, producers and roasters will attend the main forum, which runs for a further two days. The lineup of coffee events includes educational workshops, pane discussions, networking sessions, and presentations by industry leaders.
PRF provides coffee roasters with not only an opportunity to build direct relationships with producers, but an in-depth understanding of what happens at origin. Furthermore, it helps them engage in impactful conversations with coffee producers.
Previous Producer & Roaster Forum events were held in El Salvador, Brazil, Guatemala, and Honduras. This year, it will be held in Medellín, Colombia between 30th June and 1st July.
London Coffee Festival
Claimed to be the “biggest coffee party on Earth”, the London Coffee Festival (LCF) celebrates the city’s bustling specialty coffee scene.
Hosted every year at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, LFC runs over four days. Unlike a traditional trade show, the festival oozes creativity and artistic vibes with live music, DJs and even art exhibitions.
The event attracts over 30,000 attendees and feature more than 250 stalls. These showcase tasting, interactive workshops, as well as live roasting and brewing demonstrations from world-class baristas.
LFC also hosts the multi-discipline barista competition Coffee Masters, and “The Lab”. The festival’s itinerary includes panel discussions and debates on key topics, such as sustainability, inclusivity, entrepreneurship, and industry trends.
The London Coffee Festival is an unmissable event for anyone wanting to experience the city’s vibrant coffee culture.
Founded in 1966, HostMilano is a leading international trade fair dedicated to the hospitality sector.
Held over five days, it is a large-scale event taking place every two years. HostMilano welcomes experts in the global hotel, restaurant, and catering (HoReCa) industry.
Notably, the 42nd edition of HostMilano held in 2021, received over 100,000 visitors, and had over 1,300 exhibitors from 144 countries present.
This event has a diverse product portfolio, including food service, coffee, tea, and gelato, as well as machines, furniture, and tableware.
The trade fair is an ideal place for attendees to learn about the latest in technology and product innovation, and the trends that are shaping the HoReCa and coffee sector.
Additionally, the partnership between HostMilano and the SCA has confirmed two editions of the World Coffee championship at the coffee events in 2023 and 2025.
While it is admirable that roasters pour their focus into delivering the best experience to customers, it is essential for them to explore what is happening across the industry.
An effective and fun way to do so is by attending coffee events, as these are the best places to spot new trends, be inspired, and build connections. At the same time, reading articles is a great way to stay updated on the specialty coffee market.
