Today’s coffee packaging needs to tick a lot more boxes to meet the high expectations of modern consumers.

Not only does it need to preserve the coffee’s freshness and stand out on the shelf, but it also needs to be part of a closed-loop system, known as a circular economy. This is opposed to a linear, take-make-waste approach, which can be damaging and unsustainable to the environment.

As a result, compostable coffee bags have become increasingly important to specialty coffee roasters. Compostable coffee packaging is made from organic materials that completely break down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass (renewable energy) in a composting environment.

This results in nutrient-rich compost that leaves no environmentally damaging residue. Compostable coffee packaging requires an active microbial environment, such as a compost heap, to fully degrade.

When placed in a commercial composting facility, compostable coffee bags will typically disintegrate within 10-12 weeks. The compost produced can then be used for agricultural and horticultural purposes.

Our compostable coffee bags are strong and durable. To further preserve and protect your coffee, they can be reinforced with multiple layers.

Frequently asked questions

A reliable way of determining whether coffee packaging is compostable is through certifications, such as OK compost.

Packaging or products that feature the OK compost INDUSTRIAL label are guaranteed compostable in an industrial composting plant, which applies to all components, inks, and additives.

Similarly, OK compost HOME guarantees complete compostability in garden compost heaps. These certifications are issued by the European certification body Din Certco, a conformity assessment body of TÜV Rheinland Group. They are identified by the Seedling logo.

The European standard EN 13432 decrees that compostable materials must have disintegrated within 12 weeks of disposal. MTPak Coffee’s compostable pouches are certified by Din Certco as being fully compostable in a commercial composting facility.

Our compostable coffee pouches are made from the following materials:

  • Unbleached, uncoloured kraft paper
  • Rice paper
  • Polylactic acid (PLA)

See our Din Certco certification.

Our compostable coffee packaging made from rice paper and kraft paper is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

The FSC-certified paper “tick tree” symbol guarantees MTPak Coffee’s paper-based packaging materials have been ethically and sustainably sourced.

MTPak Coffee’s compostable coffee packaging can be custom-printed on uncoloured bags using water-based inks or digital printing.

Compared to conventional printing, our eco-friendly digital printing methods consume less energy and resources thanks to reduced setup costs.

Alternatively, our compostable coffee bags can be fitted with card slots or transparent windows.

Our compostable coffee packaging can also be customised using embossing, debossing, and hot stamping.
